October came up in 2022 and terrified the living daylights out of it. Some people enjoy horror films and watch them all year; others avoid them when they come on.

Arizona’s most popular horror movie would be “Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon’ which came out in 2006 with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 76% and an audience score of 75%.

Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel), a kind, normal-looking guy, is obsessed with film slashers like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger. Leslie resolves to follow in his heroes’ footsteps and, ever the self-promoter, asks a documentarian (Angela Goethals) and her team to accompany him as he builds his own horrific history.

Other honorable mentions for horror movies made in Arizona include:

  • ‘Night of the Lepus’ (1972)
  • ‘Piranha 3D’ (2010)
  • ‘Eight Legged Freaks’ (2002)
  • ‘The Prophecy’ (1995)
  • ‘Kingdom of the Spiders’ (1977)
  • ‘Near Dark’ (1997)
  • ‘Frankenstein Island’ (1981)
  • ‘Creepshow 2’ (1987)
